APO, Tunisia’s largest upstream gas producer, faced a critical issue during the 2024 Miskar shutdown. The Heat Exchanger HBG-2030A had lost significant heating efficiency - over 75% of its 1,009 seawater U-tubes were clogged. Inspections revealed a stubborn mixture of marine growth, hard scale, sand, salt, and seashells. Previous attempts using high-pressure water jetting by another contractor had failed. Replacing the exchanger appeared to be the only alternative, with a projected cost exceeding $1 million - not including installation, downtime, and production losses. APO needed a solution that could restore the heat exchanger efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.
Hydratight was selected to tackle this critical challenge. Our engineering team, supported by operations in Tunisia and the North Africa sales team, conducted an in-depth study of the exchanger and contamination profile. Through close collaboration with APO, we developed a dual-method mechanical cleaning approach:
LP Extra Heavy Pneumatic Tube Cleaner
Equipped with carbide drills, stainless steel wire brushes, and nylon spiral brushes, this equipment was purchased specifically for this operation and had never been used by Hydratight before.
High-Pressure Water Jetting
Used to remove remaining debris and ensure thorough cleaning.
